Call for 2020 Preservation Award Nominations

We are happy to share that Baltimore Heritage has begun accepting nominations for our 2020 Preservation Awards. Please send us a nomination and help us celebrate award-worthy work, from rehabbing buildings to volunteering as a tour guide or on an archeology dig. Nominations are due February 21 and self nominations are encouraged.

Our awards recognize preservation work of all kinds. Our Heritage Achievement Awards honor people who have made a contribution to Baltimore’s historic buildings and neighborhoods, including authors, advocates, community organizers, and neighbors who volunteer their time and talents.

Our Preservation Project Awards honor owners, architects, contractors, and craftspeople who have completed bricks-and-mortar projects, from restoring a historic rowhouse to creating new spaces in a former brewery or factory. We know that preservation work comes in all sizes and often requires a whole team of people, and we seek to recognize everybody who makes a rehab project happen.

Please take a look at our award categories and guidelines or go ahead and submit a nomination for a project award or achievement award today. We try to keep the process quick and easy, but if you run into trouble, please give Johns Hopkins a call at 410-332-9992 or send him an email at hopkins@baltimoreheritage.org.

Thank you for helping us recognize Baltimore’s heritage stewards. Stay tuned for details on our annual awards celebration this spring!

Thank you for celebrating with us at our 2019 Preservation Awards!

We had a wonderful evening last Thursday in a fabulous space at the A. Hoen & Co. Lithograph Building. Thanks to everyone who attended our 2019 Preservation Awards Celebration and made it a success. Special thanks to our hosts and sponsors—you can find the full list of sponsors below.

With awards including converted churches and schools, remarkable rowhouse restorations, innovative exhibits interpreting our shared history, and even the revival of an antique street car, this year’s awardees covered a lot of ground. Take a look at the award winners below and please make sure to congratulate them the next time you see them around the city!

Celebrate the 2019 Preservation Award Winners and the transformation of the A. Hoen & Co. Building!

Please join us on Thursday, June 13 for our 2019 Preservation Awards Celebration at the Hoen & Co. Lithograph Building!

From this 1885 motor factory turned printing plant, Hoen designed and published everything from survey maps in the late 1800s to psychedelic album covers in the 1960s. Today, it is being converted into a hub of offices, job training facilities, and community space in East Baltimore—and we’ll get to see it right in the middle of the transformation. With this enormous former manufacturing building as our backdrop, we’re pleased to be honoring this year’s best work in historic preservation, from the restoration of an antique streetcar at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum to the tremendous efforts by the Chinatown Collective to bring new life into Baltimore’s historic Chinatown.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with food and drink then the awards presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. This year, we’re going green! Plates, cups, and everything else we use will be either compostable or recyclable, and with food from Blue Pit that includes their signature vegetarian BBQ, we’re trying to do our part to minimize our impact. Get your tickets today and join us to celebrate our city’s efforts to revitalize our historic building and communities.

Thanks to the sponsors of this year’s event, whose generous contributions keep Baltimore Heritage going throughout the year.

Congratulations to our 2018 Preservation Award recipients!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the historic Fox Building last night to celebrate and honor this year’s preservation award recipients.

From the rehabilitation of the historic house on Walrad Street in Irvington (a project that one member of our review committee compared to a phoenix rising from the ashes) to the meticulous repairs at Homewood House and Krieger Hall on the Johns Hopkins University campus—our 2018 award recipients varied widely. The awards showcase how preservation can include everything from a meticulous restoration of the grand library at Baltimore City College to the remarkable rehabilitation at the SNF Parkway Theater that almost freezes in time the building’s worn but still magnificent interior.

Please read on for the list of award recipients or take a look at the full slideshow for before and after photos of all of the projects. Thank you again to everyone who participated last night, volunteered for the event and on our awards review committee, and to all of our generous sponsors.
