A History of Poppleton (Virtual Talk)

October 29 @ 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm

By Donation | Register

Learn about the history of Poppleton with Professor Nicole King (Department of American Studies, UMBC). King has worked with local residents and preservationists to document the important Black history of Poppleton, which has been threatened by slum clearance, urban renewal, highway construction, and redevelopment. We will also learn about ongoing advocacy efforts to preserve Poppleton’s historic places and fight displacement, such as the proposed CHAP local historic district, Black Homeownership in Old Poppleton.

Dr. Nicole King is an associate professor and chair of the Department of American Studies at UMBC. Her research focuses on issues of place, power, and economic development. She co-founded the Baltimore Traces: Communities in Transition public humanities project where students work with local partners to research historic neighborhoods and complete cultural documentation projects. She is an editor of the book Baltimore Revisited: Stories of Inequality and Resistance in a U.S. City (Rutgers University Press, 2019).
