Urban Architecture of Thomas Poppleton and the 1822 and 1851 Baltimore Maps with Dr. Ed Papenfuse

Dr. Edward Papenfuse will give a presentation on Thomas Poppleton’s significant contribution to the mapping and the development of Baltimore’s neighborhoods. He will accompany his illustrated remarks on the career of Thomas Poppleton with applying the 1822 and 1851 versions of Poppleton’s map to Google Earth in a quest for lost neighborhoods and the no longer extant architecture of the City.

Edward C. Papenfuse (www.edpapenfuse.com) is the retired Maryland State Archivist and Commissioner of Land Patents. Papenfuse received his undergraduate degree from the American University, an M.A. from the University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. in history from The Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including The Hammond-Harwood House Atlas of Historical Maps of Maryland, 1608-1908 (1982) and The Maryland State Archives Atlas of Historical Maps of Maryland 1608-1908 (2003). He continues to write about Maryland and Baltimore History on his blogs including http://rememberingbaltimore.net. He offers research advice on Zoom on Tuesdays. The Baltimore Architecture Foundation (BAF) and Baltimore Heritage present a series of 30 minute live virtual tours and presentations focusing on Baltimore architecture, preservation and history.
