Mount Vernon Place

Overview

Major restoration of Mount Vernon Place has started with the recently completed rehabilitation of the Washington Monument. Designed by architect Robert Mills, the Washington Monument is the first major monument built in honor of George Washington. Construction began in 1815 when Mount Vernon was still a pastoral country estate and was completed by 1829.

Led by the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy, a nonprofit organization formed in 2008 by leaders from the Mount Vernon Belvedere Association and park advocates, the restoration of the Washington Monument included stabilizing and restoring deteriorating masonry, installing new lighting and ultimately reopening the monument to visitors in July 2015.
