Details is a social enterprise based within Humanim, a 501(c)(3) non-profit based here in Baltimore, that uses deconstruction as a means towards creating employment, reducing waste sent to landfills, and salvaging materials for reuse.

Baltimore Brick by Brick is a blog documenting the work of Details Deconstruction throughout the late summer and fall of 2014, as they are unbuilding a block of rowhouses in the Milton-Montford neighborhood of East Baltimore. No dynamite or wrecking balls here. The plan is to take the houses apart, floorboard by floorboard, joist by joist, and brick by brick.

The project is a pilot by the Baltimore City Department of Housing, Details, local businesses and non-profits, and community members to tackle vacant and abandoned housing through deconstruction and workforce development. Unlike traditional demolition, the idea is to create: create jobs for local residents, create value by salvaging building materials, and ultimately create a community-designed green space where the houses once stood.
