SUMMARY:Gargoyles\, Landmarks and Lions: Downtown Baltimore
DESCRIPTION:Where can you find a piece of the Berlin Wall\, a cannon ball mounted on a Conestoga wagon hitch\, and over a hundred lions looking down at you from the tops of Baltimore’s buildings? On our Downtown Landmarks and Lions tour\, of course! In this leisurely stroll—we cover a little over a mile in a little over an hour—you’ll see and hear the highlights of downtown Baltimore’s history and architecture. Best of all\, you’ll discover where all the noble lions\, hellish fiends\, and neo-Egyptian sphinxes are hiding—the trick is in looking up! If you are Baltimore born-and-raised or a visitor from out-of-town\, you don’t want to miss this walking tour! \nDue to Covid precautions\, we are limiting space more than usual. All participants will be required to wear face masks and socially distance during the tour.\n \nOur Monumental City tours are guided walks exploring iconic Baltimore landmarks in Federal Hill\, Downtown\, and Ridgely’s Delight on the first three Sundays of each month from May through November\, except holiday weekends.

SUMMARY:SAY IT LOUD Maryland “Hear Our Voices” Virtual Panel
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the virtual launch of SAY IT LOUD Maryland\, join us for a panel discussion featuring four of the winners included in the exhibition. They will speak to their experiences as diverse professionals in Baltimore and the projects they are most proud of.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe physical SAY IT LOUD Maryland exhibition will open at the Baltimore Center for Architecture and Design in October 2021. \nPascale Sablan\, FAIA\, founder and Executive Director of Beyond the Built Environment will introduce the exhibition and moderate the panel. \n  \nPanel: \nHelen Ross Staley \nHelen Ross Staley is the first woman to become a member of the Baltimore Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (1955). She studied Interior Design at Stephens College in Missouri & transferred to University of Pennsylvania in 1940 for a Bachelors of Architecture degree. She won 1st place in a national Beaux Arts Institute of Design competition and was offered her first job working in New York City by one of the judges. Eventually she moved to Maryland to be with her high school sweetheart who returned from the war. They raised 4 beautiful children while she had her own practice\, mostly residential work\, with some commercial & institutional projects. \n  \nCharlston Britton Jr.\, Assoc. AIA\, NOMA \nA native of New Orleans\, Charlston Britton is an architectural designer working in Baltimore. In 2015 he was named as a LSU McNair Scholar and conducted design research on urban resilience and flood shelters. While studying at the WAAC in 2016\, he was awarded the Product Making Award in Experimentation for his distinguished process in the exploration of materials and forms. He currently serves as chair of the AIA Baltimore EP Committee and has recently completed their 2021 CivicLAB program. \n  \nNakita Reed\, AIA\, CPHC\, LEED AP BD+C\, NOMA \nNakita Reed is an award-winning preservation architect who focuses on sustainability. She’s a registered architect\, LEED AP\, and a certified Passive House Consultant. She serves on the boards of Preservation Maryland\, the Baltimore Architecture Foundation and is the host of the Tangible Remnants podcast\, which explores the intersection of architecture\, preservation\, sustainability\, race & gender. She has a MArch and a MS in Historic Preservation from UPENN and a BS in Architecture from UVA. \n  \nSarsfield Williams Jr. \nSarsfield Williams Jr. is a native Baltimorean youth advocate\, with 30+ years of organizational development and construction experience. My work seeks to inspire imagination in Baltimore City’s most vulnerable children by revitalizing mixed-income communities that foster life-long relationships and simultaneously address Black wealth inequality. As the Founding Principal at ASPIREhomes\, we build in support of Black families and the need for restorative cultural pride in the African Diaspora. \n\n  \nAbout this event\n\n\nThis program is hosted on Zoom. George Washington slept here and Babe Ruth was born here! SUMMARY:A History of Woodberry: The Heart of Industry in the Jones Falls Valley (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, Woodberry became a local historic district in recognition of its historic significance to Baltimore. Its industrial past is largely intact including the original mill village. The story of Woodberry’s growth is a story of the Industrial Revolution at the local scale. As the factories grew\, so did the neighborhood\, and many styles of homes for working families can be seen in Woodberry today. \nNathan Dennies\, Associate Director of BAF\, Chair of the Greater Hampden Heritage Alliance\, and a Board Member of the Friends of The Jones Falls\, will walk us through Woodberry’s history beginning with the flour mills of the 18th century and ending with how the neighborhood’s industrial legacy is being preserved and celebrated today. \nAbout this event\n\n\nThis program is hosted on Zoom. SUMMARY:Federal Hill Beyond the Views: A Monumental City Tour
DESCRIPTION:Baltimoreans celebrated atop Federal Hill when we ratified the U.S. Constitution. We used it to defend the city from the British in the War of 1812 and to make sure we stayed in the Union in the Civil War. We have even tunnelled under it to quarry minerals. Join us on a tour of Federal Hill and the neighborhood around it to learn about this waterfront community’s rich history\, including stops at one of the last wooden houses in the city\, the oldest house in Federal Hill\, and the wonderful alley houses along Churchill Street.   \nDue to Covid precautions\, we are limiting space more than usual.
