SUMMARY:The Nooks and Crannies of Druid Hill Park by Bike
DESCRIPTION:Escape the sensory overload of the big city\, oil up your old bike\, and spend a serene June morning exploring the nooks and crannies of beautiful Druid Hill Park with amateur historian Ralph Brown and public artist and park neighbor Graham Coreil-Allen. If you can ride a bike you will be right at home on this tour: the route will be on mostly flat\, dedicated\, safe bike trails. \nAs we pedal through the park\, we’ll find out why a “Know Nothing” party mayor in the late 1850’s left the park as a magnificent gift to Baltimore. We’ll discover a hidden Zen garden and meet its creator. We’ll learn about Baltimore’s history of segregation through testimonials present in the park today. And we’ll learn how Druid Lake has provided drinking water for nearly 150 years and behold the sublime piles of dirt that preview its recreational future. Druid Hill Park has changed in its appearance since it was established in 1860 and our tour will explore both the park’s history and the hopes and plans for improved access going forward. \nOur Baltimore By Bike Tours program has been funded by Mayor Catherine E. Pugh and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts.

SUMMARY:Steel\, Glass\, Plants and History: Behind the Scenes at the Howard P. Rawlings Conservatory
DESCRIPTION:Established in 1888 as the Druid Hill Conservatory and modeled after London’s famous Kew Gardens\, today’s Howard P. Rawlings Conservatory & Botanic Gardens has grown from its original Palm House and Orchid Room to include three greenhouses\, two display pavilions\, and outdoor gardens. Join us as we stroll through the second oldest steel framed-and-glass building in the country to learn about its history and its botanical collection. \nThe idea for a conservatory in Baltimore began In 1874 when the city’s park commissioners directed the park architect\, George A. Frederick\, to design and make plans for new botanic building. Frederick formed a conservatory committee and sent one of its members to Kew Gardens in London\, which became the model for the new design. It took over a decade to take hold\, but eventually in 1888 the first structure of iron\, glass and wood opened as the Palm House. \nMore recently\, the Conservatory closed for two years in the early 2000s for major renovations. Upon reopening to the public in 2004\, the new complex included a refurbished Palm House as well as a Mediterranean House\, a Tropical House and a Desert House. With a new name to honor Delegate Howard Peters Rawlings\, the 116 year old Conservatory now has wonderful space for its collections that match its storied history. \nOur Baltimore Behind the Scenes Tours program has been funded by Mayor Catherine E. Pugh and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts.

SUMMARY:Mount Vernon Place and the Washington Monument: Monumental City Tour
DESCRIPTION:Mount Vernon began as a country estate for Revolutionary War hero John Eager Howard and grew to be the place to live for Baltimore’s rich and famous in the mid-nineteenth century. The Garrett family\, owners of the B&O Railroad\, the Walters\, founders of the Walters Art Museum\, and the Thomases\, owners of Mercantile Bank\, are among the families that built handsome mansions along the four parks that surround the Washington Monument. The recent renovations to the two-hundred-year-old Washington Monument are the latest news from the revival of this historic neighborhood over the last decade. \nJoin us on a tour to hear the stories behind the Washington Monument and see the landmarks of Baltimore’s grandest historic neighborhood. If you are able\, you can climb the Monument’s stairs for a birds-eye view of central Baltimore! Space inside the monument is limited. Each tour is capped at fifteen people and we’ll meet at the south entrance of the monument. \nOur Monumental City tours are guided walks exploring iconic Baltimore landmarks in Downtown\, Jonestown\, Federal Hill and Mount Vernon the first four Sundays of the month from April through November\, except holiday weekends. Our Washington Monument tour is organized in partnership with the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy.

SUMMARY:Federal Hill Beyond the Views: Monumental City Tour
DESCRIPTION:Baltimoreans celebrated atop Federal Hill when we ratified the U.S. Constitution. We fortified the hill to defend the city from the British in the War of 1812 and to make sure we stayed in the Union in the Civil War. We have even tunnelled under it! Join us on a tour of Federal Hill and the surrounding neighborhood to learn about this waterfront community’s rich history\, including stops at one of the last wooden houses in the city\, the oldest house in Federal Hill\, and the wonderful alley houses along Churchill Street. \nOur Monumental City tours are guided walks exploring iconic Baltimore landmarks in Downtown\, Jonestown\, Mount Vernon and Federal Hill on the first four Sundays of each month from April through November\, except holiday weekends.

SUMMARY:Stonewall Uprising Turns 50: Celebrating LGBTQ Heritage in Mt. Vernon
DESCRIPTION:In the early morning hours of June 28\, 1969\, police raided the Stonewall Inn\, a well-known gay bar in New York’s Greenwich Village. In response\, the city’s LGBT community rose up in protest in what became a critical turning point in the nation’s struggle for LGBT rights. \n50 years to the day later\, we are partnering with Preservation Maryland to celebrate the Stonewall Inn Uprising with a walking tour exploring Baltimore’s own LGBT milestones. In our walk through Mount Vernon\, we’ll learn about pioneering lesbian women who helped shape Baltimore’s educational institutions\, medical professionals who were on the front lines of the AIDS epidemic\, and residents who founded Baltimore’s first black LGBT church. Our tour will be led by volunteer sleuths and historians Louis Hughes\, Richard Oloizia\, Shirley Parry\, and Kate Drabinski. \nWe will end the tour at the bar & restaurant Flavor to celebrate the pioneers at the Stonewall Inn and our own Baltimore pioneers. You bring the conversation and we will pick up the tab for appetizers! \nThis tour is part of a two-part LGBT heritage program made possible by funding from PNC and supported in part by Preservation Maryland and the Maryland Historical Trust. Join us on October 12\, 2019 for the second tour in the series to celebrate National Coming Out Day in Charles Village.
