SUMMARY:Public Listening Session on Maryland LGBTQ History in Baltimore
DESCRIPTION:Preservation Maryland will host a public forum and listening session about LGBTQ history in Maryland on Thursday\, June 13\, 2019\, 5:30PM-7:30PM at Chase Brexton Health Center in Baltimore City. Everyone is welcome to attend and are encouraged to come prepared to discuss local spots\, like libraries\, bars\, churches\, clinics\, and private homes\, that have been important in their own lives and to the lives of LGBTQ people in Maryland. \nAs a part of our ongoing work in LGBTQ history\, Preservation Maryland will host five public listening sessions across the state during Pride Month to help inform a forthcoming context study on LGBTQ history across the state. Preservation Maryland received funding from the Maryland Historical Trust to conduct a statewide historic context report on the important places and themes of LGBTQ life in Maryland. Dr. Susan Ferentinos\, a leading LGBTQ public history\, will be conducting the research including leading these sessions as a way to hear directly from community members about the places that are significant to local LGBTQ history. Those places will be recorded in a master list of properties and may become part of the context study expected in November. \nWhat is a listening session?\nPreservation Maryland has brought on consultant Dr. Susan Ferentinos\, author of “Interpreting LGBT History at Historic Sites and Museums\,” to research a first-of-its-kind historic context report on place-based LGBTQ history across Maryland. During the meeting\, Dr. Ferentinos will introduce the project and its goals\, followed by ample time for attendees to discuss their stories and help both identify potential sites for inclusion in the study and to build a better understanding of sites already included. \nShould I bring anything?\nPreservation Maryland is not a collecting organization\, so we ask that participants refrain from bringing any objects or ephemera. Should you want to donate materials\, we encourage you to connect with the Maryland Historical Society. SUMMARY:Public Archaeology at The Caulkers' Houses: Open House Weekend
DESCRIPTION:During the month of May\, volunteer archaeologists led by Lisa Kraus and Jason Shellenhamer are carefully digging through layers of history at the Caulker’s Houses in Fell’s Point. Please stop by the weekend of June 1–2 anytime from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to discover what the dig has turned up on our free public archaeology tour of organized in partnership by the Herring Run Archaeology Project\, Baltimore Heritage\, and the Preservation Society of Federal Hill and Fell’s Point\, and the Friends of 612-614 South Wolf Street. \nBuilt as early as 1801\, the Caulker’s Houses at 612 and 614 South Wolfe Street are two of the smallest and oldest wooden homes remaining in Fell’s Point. Between 1842 and 1854\, the buildings became homes to African American ship caulkers Richard Jones\, Henry Scott\, and John Whittington. The shipbuilding industry in Fell’s Point depended on free and enslaved black labor and these small homes provide an important reminder of that history. The buildings are also known the Two Sisters Houses after sisters Mary Leeke Rowe Dashiell and Eleanor Marine Dashiell\, the last owners before Preservation Society acquired the buildings. \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to be partnering on a walking tour of the Jones Falls River with Charm City Meadworks and Blue Water Baltimore! The walk is part of Urban Wilderness Weekend\, a weekend full of dance parties\, art shows and other activities hosted by Charm City Meadworks and sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation.  \nOn our Jones Falls walk\, we will cover 2-miles in approximately 2 hours. Along the way\, we’ll explore the more-than-human world through our senses\, learn about urban watershed ecology\, and have the opportunity to reflect upon and share the insights that nature-based experiences yield. In addition to learning about the nature that is around us in the Jones Falls watershed\, we’ll learn about the valley’s rich human heritage\, from where the bottle cap was invented to why Baltimore has a hundred year old building built entirely on stilts.
