Around Mount Vernon Place, memorials in bronze and marble honor slave-holders – George Washington, John Eager Howard, and Roger B. Taney. No statue recognizes the labor of the enslaved people who worked and lived in the neighborhood’s handsome antebellum houses. Join Baltimore Heritage and the Maryland Historical Society on a two-part tour to explore the stories of slavery and emancipation in Mt. Vernon. The tour will start by discussing several objects in the Historical Society’s collection with a Society curator and then Mr. Eli Pousson of Baltimore Heritage will lead a short stroll around Mt. Vernon uncovering the lives of enslaved people and slave-owners with stories from violent politics of the Civil War and the revolutionary changes of emancipation. We hope you can join us!
