Baltimore Building of the Week: Mount Clare Mansion

For our 50th anniversary year, Baltimore Heritage is posting a new image each week featuring one of Baltimore’s historic buildings and the story of how preservation took part in Baltimore history. Our images and captions for this series are provided by Dr. John Breihan, a professor of history and preservation at Loyola University and a vice-president for Baltimore Heritage. The very first image of the year is of the 1763 Mount Clare Museum House,

Probably the oldest structure standing in Baltimore City is the Mount Clare Mansion in Carroll Park. A perfect five-part Georgian Palladian plantation house, Mount Clare was built about 1760. It was saved by the Colonial Dames of America, who operate it as a house museum.

  1. Mount Clare is listed in the Historic Marker database. Here is a link to one of the listings. http://www.hmdb.org/Marker.asp?Marker=3153. The database contains 293 Baltimore City markers, many with photos of historic homes and buildings. The Mother Seton House and St. Mary’s Seminary Chapel are also published. My wife and I were given a Baltimore Heritage membership as a Christmas gift and look forward to your field trips.

What a great idea to feature one house or building each week. I look forward to learning more about historic sites in Baltimore and I’m sure others will too.

Thank you for the link and welcome to Baltimore Heritage, Bill. We’ll be posting updates about our Behind the Scenes tours regularly and we hope that if you like taking photos you might be interested in contributing to our new Baltimore Heritage Flickr group. I hope we can meet in person sometime soon!

Four years on, I thank you for sharing the link and your talent. I used to live very close to Carroll Park and the old Montgomery Ward building. Used to play in the park just about every day back in the late ’50’s and through the ’60’s. Thanks once again.
