Just next to the Rogers Mansion at the Maryland Zoo is another architectural gem, the Maryland House. Join Baltimore Heritage and Preservation Maryland for a tour of this historic building that was Maryland’s showcase in the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition with tour guides Tony Azola of the Azola Companies and Lori Finkelstein, Vice President of Education, Interpretation, and Volunteer Programs (and unofficial historian) at the Zoo.

In all likelihood, the Rogers Mansion or the “Mansion House,” is the building that first pops into your mind when you think of historic buildings at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. Just next to it, however, is another architectural gem, the Maryland House. Join Baltimore Heritage and Preservation Maryland for tour of the Maryland House with Tony Azola of the Azola Companies and Lori Finkelstein, Vice President of Education, Interpretation, and Volunteer Programs (and unofficial historian) at the Zoo.

The Maryland House was built for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Following the fair, the building dismantled, moved to Druid HIll Park, and rebuilt on the Zoo grounds. The Zoo itself was created that same year, making it the third oldest zoo in the United States. Once on the Zoo grounds, the Maryland House served as a natural history museum. Today, it houses the Zoo’s Education Department. The Zoo, with the help of the Azola Companies, recently restored the Maryland House and it again is a showcase for the best of Maryland architecture as it was back in 1876.

Along with the Rogers Mansion, the Maryland House is part of a collection of 19th-century structures on the Zoo grounds that stand as a reminder of the long history of the organization. Other structures include the Waterfowl Lake Pavilion and Boat House.

Parking is available in a surface lot in front of the Rogers Mansion, just a few feet from the Maryland House. To get to the house follow the directions below.
